The
American Reformed Church at Lynden has roots in the
Protestant Reformation -- when reformers such as Martin
Luther and John Calvin exposed heresies within the Roman
Catholic Church.
These
16th-century reformers worked to bring Christ's Church
back to its early foundations: "scripture alone", "by
faith alone", "by grace alone" (etc.). Throughout the
following centuries, the church has experienced other
periods of reformation. During the Second World War,
a struggle was taking place among the Reformed Churches
in the Netherlands, which led, unfortunately, to a split
among Reformed Churches there.
Following World War II, many Dutch families emigrated
to Canada and the United States. Some of these immigrants
discovered that, for a variety of reasons (ecclesiological
and/or doctrinal) they could not -- in good conscience
-- join any existing Reformed church in North America.
Thus, the first Canadian Reformed Church was instituted
in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1950. Many more congregations
have been instituted over the years, so that there are
now approximately 16,000 members in 55 congregations
in the Federation of Canadian and American Reformed
Churches.
The
American Reformed Church at Lynden was instituted on
March 10, 1985. We currently have 358 members.
